Here's How Residents Can Help With Medical Fees Of Abused Dog Maya

Apr 13, 2023

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — Residents who want to contribute to the financial costs associated with the treatment of a 9-year-old Siberian husky named Maya who is the subject of an animal cruelty investigation can donate to the Hillsborough County Pet Resources Foundation Inc.

On May 1, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Hillsborough County Animal Services responded to an animal abuse complaint in Town ’n' Country. The sheriff's office arrested Elizabeth Jaimes, who had been living in the home with her boyfriend and his mother, the owner of the dog. A surveillance camera showed Jaimes repeatedly beating the dog with a rubber mallet over the course of months.

After being brought to the Veterinary Emergency Group, Maya was found to have had multiple blunt-force head and back injuries, including spine and rib fractures, and is blind in one eye, the sheriff's office reported.

The case, including video taken from a hidden camera, prompted numerous inquiries from residents who wanted to contribute to the dog's care.

Hillsborough County contracts with the Veterinary Emergency Group to treat certain animal cases, and the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center temporarily cared for the dog before it was returned to its owner.

Veterinary costs from the case are nearly $3,000.

Those who want to help pay for Maya's care can donate to the Hillsborough County Pet Resources Foundation Inc. at hcprfoundation.org or by calling 813-586-1988.

The foundation helps offset the costs of expensive veterinary cases, promotes adoption and fostering, and supports programs that enhance animal welfare.

In addition to the animal cruelty charge Jaimes faces, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Hillsborough County Animal Services are working to legally prohibit Jaimes from being able to own a pet in the future, a process known as enjoinment.
