Driver hit street with sledgehammer in Thurso road rage incident

Apr 20, 2023

A driver was so frustrated by the slow pace of traffic in Thurso that he took a sledgehammer from his vehicle and "assaulted" the road with it.

Robin Ayre (55) admitted threatening or abusive behaviour in a letter and was given a chance by the sheriff at Wick to demonstrate he can behave.

The court heard on Wednesday that there was a build-up of traffic in Sir George's Street and Millbank Road, Thurso, on August 21, last year.

David Barclay said that Ayre lost his temper over the delay but went about it "completely the wrong way".

The fiscal added: "It was more by way of demonstrating his feelings, putting on a show, as opposed to causing anyone harm."

Sheriff Mark Lindsay made Ayre, Bridgend, Thurso, subject to a three-month good behaviour bond and will consider forfeiture of the hammer when the accused makes a personal appearance at Wick Sheriff Court on August 23.
