Retired Marine to give address at Minot’s Memorial Day program

Trygve Hammer, a retired U.S. Marine Corps major, will give the address at this year's Minot Memorial Day program set for Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Veterans Section in Rosehill Memorial Park. Advancement of the motorcycles of veterans and supporters will begin at 10 a.m.

Hammer graduated from Velva High School in 1985 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a nuclear power machinist mate. The next year he was nominated by the Secretary of the Navy and appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated in 1990 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in 2001. Two years later he was deployed to Iraq as an infantry weapons platoon commander and battalion forward air controller. He also had several other assignments. While serving with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, he also was an airline pilot, defense contractor and a security consultant. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 2010 and returned to North Dakota in 2016.

Others taking part in the program include Minot veterans organizations and auxiliaries, Father Jacob Degele, Steve Veikley, Lila and Samantha Farden, and Joe Skurzewski.

The Strewing of the Flowers Ceremony will be held at the Veterans Memorial Walkway, formerly Eighth Street Northwest Bridge, at 8 a.m.

This year's programs are arranged by the Minot American Legion Post 26 and Auxiliary.
